Husband
Laura Mackenzie Phillips has entered into matrimony three times. Her first marriage was to rock group manager Jeffrey Sessler, lasting from 1979 to 1981. Following that, she tied the knot with rock guitarist Shane Fontayne, a union that lasted from 1986 to 2000. Her third marriage was to Keith Levenson in 2005, but the two later divorced. She is a mother to one child, her son Shane Barakan, born in 1987, who is a musician. In a March 2022 interview, she revealed that she has experienced relationships with both men and women.
Relation with Father
Following the publication of her memoir High on Arrival in September 2009, Phillips participated in an hour-long interview on The Oprah Winfrey Show. She admitted to Winfrey that she had used cocaine for the first time at the age of eleven and that her father had given her an injection of the substance along with other narcotics. The conversation featured readings from Phillips’ book. As she explained, “I woke up that night from a blackout to discover myself having sex with my own father,” the night before her first wedding in 1979, when she was 19 years old. When she confronted her father months later, asking why he had raped her, he simply stated, “Raped you? Do you not mean that we had sex?” Phillips revealed to Oprah.
Career
At the age of 12, Phillips formed a band with three classmates, and her talent caught the eye of a casting agent during one of their performances. This led to an audition for a role in the 1973 film American Graffiti, where she successfully secured the part of Carol Morrison. Due to California state law, producer Gary Kurtz became Phillips’s legal guardian during the film’s production.
Phillips rose to fame in the 1970s through her portrayal of teenager Julie Cooper (later Horvath upon marriage) on the long-running TV show One Day at a Time, earning a substantial weekly salary of $50,000. However, her struggles with drug and alcohol abuse led to late arrivals and incoherent rehearsals, resulting in a temporary dismissal in 1977. After two near-fatal overdoses, she voluntarily entered Fair Oaks Hospital for treatment in 1980. Although invited back to One Day at a Time in 1981, her relapse into drug use in 1982 led to a permanent dismissal in 1983.
From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, Phillips embarked on a singing career, touring with a re-formed version of The Mamas & the Papas known as The New Mamas and The Papas. In 1999, she starred in the Disney Channel series So Weird and performed original songs. Her diverse career includes appearances in ER, Without a Trace, 7th Heaven, Cold Case, and Beverly Hills, 90210.
Phillips received an Honorary Best Actress award in 2011 for her role in the independent film Peach Plum Pear. In 2016, she began working as a drug rehab counselor at the Breathe Life Healing Center in West Hollywood. Notably, she appeared in the rebooted One Day at a Time in 2017 and 2019, portraying a counselor, and in 2018, she played Barbara Denning in multiple episodes of the Netflix original Orange Is the New Black.
