Career

Early Career

Ramsay’s culinary journey ignited during his teenage years when he opted to shift his focus from being known as “the football player with the gammy knee.” At the age of 19, he made a conscious decision to delve into culinary education. Sponsored by the Rotarians, Ramsay enrolled at North Oxfordshire Technical College to pursue hotel management. Describing his entry into catering college as “a complete accident,” Ramsay’s culinary path took a significant turn.

At 23, Ramsay relocated to Paris, where he worked alongside Michelin-starred chefs Guy Savoy and Joël Robuchon. He dedicated three years to honing his skills in the culinary arts in France. However, succumbing to the physical and mental challenges of the kitchen, Ramsay took a one-year hiatus to serve as a personal chef on the private yacht Idlewild, stationed in Bermuda. During his time on the boat, he traveled to Sicily and Sardinia, Italy, gaining valuable insights into Italian cuisine.

Career as a Head Chef

Upon returning to London in 1993, Ramsay was appointed head chef at the three-Michelin-starred La Tante Claire in Chelsea, under chef-patron Pierre Koffmann. Shortly after, Marco Pierre White offered Ramsay a head chef position and a 10% share in the Rossmore, owned by White’s business partners. Renamed Aubergine, the restaurant earned its first Michelin star 14 months later and a second in 1997. Disagreements with business owners led to Ramsay leaving the partnership in July 1998, marking a pivotal moment in his career.

As the head judge of MasterChef USA during Season 10, Nick DeGiovanni secured the third-place position. On May 11, 2023, in collaboration with Gordon Ramsay, he achieved a Guinness World Record for creating the largest beef wellington, weighing in at 25.76 kilograms (56.79 pounds). Remarkably, this marked DiGiovanni’s eighth Guinness World Record and was accomplished in partnership with celebrity chefs Max the Meat Guy, Guga Foods, and The Golden Balance.

Television Career

Ramsay’s television career began with documentaries like “Boiling Point” and “Beyond Boiling Point.” He judged a MasterChef-like series in 1997 and appeared on “Faking It” in 2001, winning a BAFTA. “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” aired in 2004, and “Hell’s Kitchen” debuted on ITV1. In 2005, he introduced “Hell’s Kitchen” to the U.S. In 2007, “Kitchen Nightmares” premiered in the U.S. Ramsay hosted “The F Word” and produced/judged “MasterChef” in 2010. He explored India in “Gordon’s Great Escape” and hosted “Ramsay’s Best Restaurant.” Ramsay participated in “The Big Fish Fight” in 2010 and launched “Hotel Hell” in 2012.

Gordon Ramsay Restaurants

In 1998, Ramsay established Restaurant Gordon Ramsay in Chelsea with support from his father-in-law, Chris Hutcheson, and former Aubergine colleagues. Achieving its third Michelin star in 2001, Ramsay became the first Scot to attain this honor. The Good Food Guide recognized Restaurant Gordon Ramsay as the second-best restaurant in the UK in 2011, following the Fat Duck in Bray, Berkshire.

Expanding his culinary empire, Ramsay introduced Pétrus, Amaryllis in Glasgow (later closed), and Gordon Ramsay at Claridge’s. Collaborating with maître d’hôtel Jean-Philippe Susilovic, known for his role in Ramsay’s US TV show Hell’s Kitchen, the ventures continued with establishments in Dubai, Tokyo (Verre, Gordon Ramsay at Conrad Tokyo, Cerise by Gordon Ramsay), and New York City (Gordon Ramsay at the London). In 2007, Ramsay opened his first restaurant in Ireland, Gordon Ramsay at Powerscourt, which closed in 2013. In 2008, he ventured into the Western US with a restaurant in The London West Hollywood Hotel. The restaurant in Montreal, Laurier Gordon Ramsay, opened in 2011 but closed in 2013 following disassociation from Ramsay due to perceived lack of involvement and understanding.

Controversy

In April 2009, it was revealed that Ramsay’s restaurant, Foxtrot Oscar, and three gastropubs in London used pre-prepared food with mark-ups of up to 586%.

Ramsay’s spokesperson defended the practice, stating that chefs prepared components to high standards, sealed them, and transported them to kitchens with limited cooking space for final preparation.

On March 23, 2022, in a BBC Radio 2 interview, Ramsay remarked, “…Trust me I absolutely love Cornwall, it’s just the Cornish I can’t stand.”

Clir D. Cole, leader of Mebyon Kernow, criticized Ramsay’s lack of respect for the Cornish people and called for reflection and an apology.

Ramsay’s spokesman dismissed the remarks as tongue-in-cheek, stating Ramsay had made similar comments before.
