At the age of 12, John Patrick Ruffo embarked on his musical journey, inspired by his idol Michael Jackson. Alongside teaching himself to play the guitar and piano, he wrote his first song at the age of 14. Ruffo attended Balcatta Senior High School and, before entering The X Factor, worked as a concreter, influenced by his father’s involvement in the trade. He also performed in Perth with the electropop band Supanova.
Successfully auditioning for the third season of The X Factor Australia in 2011, he sang Jay Sean’s “Do You Remember” and advanced to the live shows, mentored by Guy Sebastian. Although he was the last contestant eliminated on November 22, 2011, with Reece Mastin declared the winner, Ruffo’s talent garnered attention.

On August 10, 2017, it was revealed that John Patrick Ruffo had undergone surgery to extract a brain tumor, a discovery made after he sought medical attention for a migraine. Sharing post-surgery images on his social media, Ruffo requested his fans to keep him in their thoughts. A week later, he confirmed being diagnosed with brain cancer and pledged to commence aggressive treatment promptly.
In a May 2019 radio interview with Fitzy & Wippa, Ruffo announced he was currently free of cancer. Subsequently, in June 2019, he released his first single in four years titled “Broken Glass,” expressing its deeply personal and vulnerable nature, loosely inspired by his experiences in the preceding years.
