Troye Sivan was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, to Laurelle Mellet, a former model and homemaker, and Shaun Mellet, an entrepreneur and real estate agent. Career
Sivan’s musical journey began with performances at the 2006, 2007, and 2008 Channel Seven Perth Telethon, where he even had a duet with Australian Idol winner Guy Sebastian in 2006. He reached the finals of StarSearch 2007 and released his debut EP, Dare to Dream, in June 2007. In 2010, he played a significant role in “We Are the World 25 for Haiti (YouTube Edition),” a charity video aiding the 2010 Haiti earthquake victims, organized by Lisa Lavie.
In June 2013, Sivan signed with EMI Australia, a Universal Music Australia label, and revealed it a year later. He released his five-song EP, TRXYE, on 15 August 2014, featuring the hit single “Happy Little Pill.” TRXYE topped iTunes charts in over 55 countries and debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, marking his first Top 10 album. “Happy Little Pill” also achieved commercial success, reaching No. 10 on the ARIA Singles Chart and earning gold certification from the Australian Recording Industry Association for over 35,000 copies shipped.
Sivan continued his musical journey with the release of his second major-label EP, Wild, on 4 September 2015. This EP was accompanied by a music video trilogy called Blue Neighbourhood, featuring the songs “Wild,” “Fools,” and “Talk Me Down,” released between September and December 2015. These works served as a prelude to his debut studio album, Blue Neighbourhood, which was launched on 4 December 2015. He continued his musical journey with the Blue Neighbourhood Tour and Suburbia Tour in 2016. In May 2017, he collaborated with Martin Garrix on the track “There for You.” In January 2018, Sivan released the single “My My My!” with an accompanying music video. His song “Strawberries & Cigarettes” from the Love, Simon soundtrack received a nomination for the 2018 Satellite Awards for Best Original Song. Following the release of “The Good Side,” he unveiled “Bloom” as the third single in May 2018, announcing his second studio album titled Bloom. In January 2019, Sivan released the single “I’m So Tired…” with American singer-songwriter Lauv. During the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020, he released “Take Yourself Home,” the first single from his fifth EP in a Dream, collaborating with freelance artists for visual artwork and charity efforts. In July 2020, he released the single “Easy” and announced the concept EP In a Dream, which was released on 21 August 2020. In April 2021, his collaboration “You” with Regard and Tate McRae topped Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Songs chart for eight weeks. He followed up with the release of “Angel Baby” in September 2021, achieving viral success in Southeast Asia.
In February 2022, two original songs written by Sivan for the film Three Months were released. Later, in December 2022, he collaborated with PNAU on a track titled “You Know What I Need.” Sivan announced his third studio album, Something to Give Each Other, on 13 July 2023, along with the lead single “Rush.” The second single, “Got Me Started,” was released on 20 September, and the album was officially launched on 13 October.
In 2018, Sivan played a supporting role in the film Boy Erased. In 2022, he starred as Caleb, a 17-year-old exposed to HIV after a one-night encounter on the eve of his high school graduation, in the feature film Three Months. The movie delves into the enduring stigma faced by HIV-positive individuals.
On 22 November 2021, Sivan was announced as a regular cast member in the HBO drama series The Idol. Unfortunately, the series was canceled in August 2023 after just one season.
