Career
In 2015, Saddiq served as a Perdana Fellow to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Nancy Shukri. As a law graduate, he gained prominence in 2016 when he joined 24 other youths, known as Change Led by the Young Generation (Challenger), in publicly rejecting Najib Razak’s leadership amid the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. Saddiq led ARMADA, the youth wing of BERSATU, and served as its spokesperson since its establishment in September 2016. He was considered one of the founding members of the party and held a seat on the party council.
He served as the Minister of Youth and Sports in the Pakatan Harapan (PH) administration under former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad from July 2018 to the collapse of the PH administration in February 2020, making him the youngest federal minister in Malaysian history. Syed Saddiq is a founding member and served as the 1st President of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) from September 2020 to November 2023. He was also a founding member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU) and served as its 1st Youth Chief from September 2016 to May 2020.
Currently, as the sole MUDA MP, Syed Saddiq faces disqualification as an MP for Muar due to his conviction and sentencing to imprisonment exceeding one year. In 2021, he was charged with several counts of corruption, including criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of funds, and money laundering. On October 28, 2022, the High Court ordered him to enter his defence after the prosecution presented sufficient evidence against him. On November 9, 2023, Syed Saddiq was convicted of all corruption charges, receiving a sentence of 7 years’ imprisonment, a RM 10 million fine, and two strokes of the cane.
