Prince Mateen attended St. Andrew’s School for primary education in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, and pursued his secondary education at the prestigious Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College and Jerudong International School. In July 2014, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international politics from King’s College London, and in July 2016, he received a Master of Arts degree in international studies and diplomacy from the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies.

Prince Mateen’s Military career
On May 9, 2010, Prince Mateen commenced his Commissioning Course for Regular Army Officers at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, graduating on April 15, 2011, as a Second Lieutenant. His promotion to Acting Captain took effect on August 31, 2016. After completing Elementary Flying Training at RAF Cranwell in April 2017, he qualified as a helicopter pilot in March 2018 at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, RAF Shawbury, earning his flying brevet (wings) from his father. On June 30, 2019, he was granted honorary membership in the Special Forces Regiment as part of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces’ 58th-anniversary celebrations.
On May 20, 2021, Prince Mateen was promoted to the rank of Major. Later that year, he successfully completed The All Arms Commando Course at the Commando Training Centre Royal Marines in the UK, earning the Green Beret. Following Basic Parachute Training on September 23, 2022, an award ceremony was held at RAF Brize Norton.
Prince Mateen’s Diplomatic Journey
After leaders’ bilateral meetings in Amman on October 4, 2018, which included the signing of three memoranda of understanding in infrastructure, tourism, and defense, along with a customs cooperation agreement, Brunei and Jordan affirmed their enduring alliance. On October 22, 2019, Prince Mateen participated in the elaborate succession ceremony of Japan’s Emperor Naruhito to the Chrysanthemum throne, attending alongside his father. The ceremony marked the culmination of a transition initiated by his father’s abdication earlier that year.
From March 13 to 14, 2023, Prince Mateen conducted a comprehensive tour of Naval Special Warfare (NSW) commands in Coronado, California. During this visit, he engaged with NSW members, including discussions with Rear Admiral Keith B. Davids, chief of Navy Special Warfare Command, exploring potential areas of future cooperation. He also gained insights into the human performance program at NSWG-1, which integrates various elements such as strength and conditioning training, sports medicine, performance psychology, performance nutrition, and research and technologies related to human performance.

Prince Mateen represented Brunei in polo at the 2017 and 2019 Southeast Asian Games, drawing nearly 3,000 spectators during the 2017 SEA Games, where he and his sister, Princess Azemah, faced off against Malaysian Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. In a charity football match on April 7, 2007, Captain Abdul Mateen led the AM Gunners to a 1–1 draw against team Projek Ikan Pusu (PIP) at the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, raising a total of B$12,192. Another charity match featuring Mateen-led AM Gunners and Sport School took place at the same venue on March 22, 2008.
