Wife and Children
Brosnan has entered into matrimony twice. Following the tragic loss of his first wife, he began dating and acquired a residence in Wimbledon. In December 1980, Brosnan married for the first time, and the union resulted in the birth of their son, Sean, on September 13, 1983, who later pursued a career in acting. They also embraced Harris’ two children from her previous marriage, Charlotte (1971–2013) and Chris, adopting them after their father Dermot Harris passed away in 1986.
Harris had harbored a desire for Brosnan to portray James Bond, a dream realized in 1995, four years after her passing. Sadly, Brosnan’s adopted daughter Charlotte succumbed to ovarian cancer on June 28, 2013.
In 1994, Brosnan met American journalist Keely Shaye Smith during a trip to Mexico. The two tied the knot in 2001 at Ballintubber Abbey in Ireland. Their union has blessed them with two sons named Dylan and Paris.
Career
Carmichael introduced Brosnan to his first James Bond film, “Goldfinger,” when he was just 11 years old. After relocating to London, Brosnan attended Elliott School in Putney, now known as Ark Putney Academy. Reflecting on his move from Ireland to England, he remarked, “When you go to a very large city, a metropolis like London, as an Irish boy of 10, life suddenly moves pretty fast. […] And you’re Irish. And they make you feel it; the British have a wonderful way of doing that, and I had a certain deep sense of being an outsider.” His school nickname was simply “Irish.”
At the age of 16, Brosnan initially pursued a career as a painter and received training in commercial illustration at Saint Martin’s School of Art in London. However, his path took a turn when he stumbled upon a fire-eating workshop during a rehearsal at the Ovalhouse. Intrigued, he decided to participate. Subsequently, Brosnan dedicated three years to training as an actor at the Drama Centre London. Describing the impact of acting on his life, he expressed, “When I found acting, or when acting found me, it was a liberation. It was a stepping stone into another life, away from a life that I had, and acting was something I was good at, something which was appreciated. That was a great satisfaction in my life.”
Upon graduating from the Drama Centre in 1975, Brosnan began his career as an acting assistant stage manager at the York Theatre Royal. He made his acting debut in “Wait Until Dark,” and within six months, playwright Tennessee Williams personally selected him to portray McCabe in the British premiere of “The Red Devil Battery Sign” (credited as “Pierce Brosman”). This performance garnered attention in London, and Brosnan still holds the telegram sent by Williams, expressing, “Thank God for you, my dear boy.” In 1977, he was chosen by Franco Zeffirelli to star in the play “Filumena” by Eduardo De Filippo, alongside Joan Plowright and Frank Finlay.
Career in James Bond
Brosnan’s introduction to James Bond film producer Albert R. Broccoli occurred on the set of “For Your Eyes Only.” His first wife, Cassandra Harris, played Countess Lisl von Schlaf, the mistress to Milos Columbo in the film. Broccoli, impressed by Brosnan’s potential, stated, “if he can act … he’s my guy” as a potential successor to Roger Moore’s Bond role. Reports from Entertainment Tonight and the National Enquirer suggested Brosnan might also take on another of Moore’s roles, that of Simon Templar in “The Saint.” Brosnan refuted these rumors in July 1993, clarifying that while he had been considered for the part, it remained undeveloped in Hollywood.
In 1986, NBC canceled “Remington Steele.” Simultaneously, Brosnan was offered the role of James Bond, leading to increased attention and a renewal of “Remington Steele.” Contractually obligated to return to the show, Brosnan’s commitment forced Eon Productions to seek an alternative for the 007 role, ultimately selecting Timothy Dalton for “The Living Daylights” (1987) and “Licence to Kill” (1989). Despite his reluctance to discuss losing the Bond role, as Dalton was a friend, Brosnan participated in Diet Coke commercials embodying a Bond-like character. NBC also promoted “Noble House” with Brosnan adorned in a Bond-like tuxedo. Legal disputes between the Bond producers and the studio led to the cancellation of a proposed third Dalton film in 1991, placing the Bond series on hiatus. Once the legal issues were resolved, and Dalton chose not to return, Brosnan was officially announced as the fifth actor to play Bond on June 7, 1994.
Brosnan was initially considered for a role alongside Jamie Dornan and Cillian Murphy in the film “H-Block,” centered on The Maze Prison Escape events, directed by Jim Sheridan. Although slated for filming in August 2017, it was later rescheduled to March 2018 due to cast scheduling conflicts. As of today, the film’s preliminary production has not commenced.
In another project, Brosnan is cast alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Vanessa Redgrave in a historical period piece titled “The Wreck of The Medusa,” based on Jonathan Miles’ novel. The film, directed by Peter Webber, unfolds against the early 19th-century backdrop during King Louis XVIII’s reign in France. Despite facing setbacks due to a perceived lack of interest in films about artists, the project remains in development.
There were rumors in July 2017 linking Brosnan to an upcoming video game called “Shadow Stalkers,” led by ZOOM Platform. However, his role in the project is yet to be disclosed.
During Star Wars Celebration 2019 in Chicago, a mural featuring an artist’s representation of Grand Admiral Thrawn bearing a striking resemblance to Brosnan fueled speculation about his potential involvement in the Star Wars franchise.
Looking ahead, Brosnan is scheduled to lead the hitman thriller film “Fast Charlie,” directed by Phillip Noyce, with shooting expected to commence in spring 2022.
