Kennedy was born in Busselton, three hours south of Perth. His family moved to Perth, and she finished primary school there. At age 11, he joined her first club, Perry Lakes Little Athletics. Kennedy took up pole-vaulting a year later after a pole vault coach recognized her talent at a track and field meet. In 2012, aged 14, Kennedy finished second at the Australian Pole Vault Championships with a personal best of 4.10 metres. A year later, she achieved a personal best of 4.31 meters and finished fifth at the IAAF Youth (U18) World Championships. At the 2014 IAAF World Juniors, she jumped a personal best of 4.40m but narrowly missed out on a medal, finishing fourth.

In February 2015 in Perth, Kennedy cleared 4.43m, then 4.50m and finally 4.59m, a junior world record. This qualified her for the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, but she failed to clear the opening height in the qualifying round.

In 2018, Kennedy improved her personal best to 4.60m and a week later became Australia’s third all-time with 4.71m. At the national championships, she jumped 4.60 m, ahead of New Zealand’s Olympic bronze medalist Eliza McCartney.

At the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Kennedy won bronze. In early 2020, Kennedy cleared her second best at 4.61m and has gone 4.70m or better in eight straight events. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Kennedy jumped 4.40 meters while injured, qualifying 12th.

Kennedy raised the Australian record to 4.82 meters at the 2021 Sydney Track Classic.

At the 2022 World Athletics Championships, Kennedy won bronze at 4.80 metres. At the distance, Kennedy achieved the highest jump by an Australian at the World Athletics Championships,

surpassing Alana Boyd’s 4.60m at the 2015 World Athletics Championships in Beijing. The following month, Kennedy won gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games with 4.60 metres.

At the 2023 World Championships in Athletics, Kennedy won gold in the 4.90 m distance, which she shared with American athlete Katie Moon.

Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy Share Emotional Pole Vault Gold

In a night full of drama and emotion, American Katie Moon (née Nageotte) and Australian Nina Kennedy shared the pole vault gold medal at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary on Wednesday (August 23).

Katie Moon and Nina Kennedy Share Emotional Pole Vault Gold

In a scene reminiscent of the high jump final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where Qatar’s Mutaz Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi decided to share their gold medals, the two pole vaulters shared a warm embrace as they agreed to contest the jump for both. Home. world championships

For Moon, this world gold is the second of her multi-layered track and field, after last year’s victory in Eugene. But such a medal has never been won by a reigning Olympic champion.

After a heated competition that saw the bar rise 5cm higher than last year’s winning height of 4.85, both Moon and Kennedy had to dig as deep as possible for this win.
