Hannes Strydom Cause of Death
Hannes Strydom, a member of South Africa’s celebrated 1995 Rugby World Cup-winning team, passed away in a car accident, as announced by the South African Rugby Union on Monday. He was 58 years old.
The union released a statement revealing that Strydom lost his life in the crash on Sunday evening.
Strydom, a lock, represented South Africa in 21 tests and 10 additional games from 1993 to 1997.
Tragically, he is the fifth member of the 1995 Springboks to pass away at a relatively young age. Flanker Ruben Kruger succumbed to brain cancer at the age of 39 in 2010, halfback Joost van der Westhuizen battled motor neurone disease for years before passing away at 45 in 2017, and wings James Small and Chester Williams both died from heart attacks within two months of each other in 2019. Small was 50, and Williams was 49.
