He started attending Phoenix Coyotes games at the age of two, with his favorite players being Shane Doan and Daniel Brière. Drafted 57th overall by the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Everett Silvertips in the 2012 WHL Bantam Draft, Matthews chose to play for the USA Hockey National Team Development Program, competing in the United States Hockey League (USHL). He received the USA Hockey Bob Johnson Award for excellence in international competition on May 21, 2015. Matthews made history as the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his NHL debut.

He scored 40 goals in his rookie season in 2016–17, setting a Maple Leafs rookie record and becoming just the second rookie since the 2004–05 lockout to achieve this feat, alongside Alexander Ovechkin. This performance earned him the Calder Memorial Trophy as the NHL’s top rookie that season. In 2020–21, Matthews clinched the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy as the league’s leading goal scorer with 41 goals in 52 games. In the 2021–22 season, he broke records for most goals scored in a single season by both an American-born player and a Maple Leaf, reached the 60-goal milestone for the first time, and secured his second consecutive Rocket Richard Trophy.

Auston Matthews Reaches 50-Goal Milestone for Second Time in Career

In a game against the Arizona Coyotes, Auston Matthews, center for the Toronto Maple Leafs, achieved his second career 50-goal milestone on Wednesday night in his hometown. He went on to score his 51st goal during the same game, as the Maple Leafs triumphed over the Coyotes with a score of 6-3. Auston Matthews Reaches 50-Goal Milestone for Second Time in Career

This milestone of 50 goals in 54 games also sets a new team record for the Maple Leafs. Although Matthews had already scored 51 goals in 50 games during the 2021-2022 season, reaching the mark within the season and not within the team’s first 50 games, no other player has surpassed the 40-goal threshold this season. At 26 years old, Matthews joins an elite group as only the second player in Maple Leafs history to reach the 50-goal mark twice, alongside Rick Vaive, who achieved this feat in three consecutive seasons in the early 1980s. Only four Maple Leafs players have scored 50 goals in a single season, with Dave Andreychuk recording 53 goals in 1994 and Gary Leeman scoring 51 goals in 1991.
