Cause of Death
Alexei Navalny, known as one of the fiercest critics of Russian President Vladimir Putin, has passed away while serving a 19-year sentence in an Arctic penal colony. His death was confirmed by Russia’s Federal Penitentiary Service, stating that Navalny fell ill after a walk on Friday and subsequently lost consciousness at the penal colony.
The prison, known for its harsh winters, is situated in the town of Kharp in the Yamalo-Nenets region, approximately 1,900 kilometers northeast of Moscow. Navalny, convicted on charges of extremism, had been transferred to this location in December.
Family
Alexei Navalny’s parents, Lyudmila Navalnaya and Anatoly Navalny, managed a basket-weaving factory in the village of Kobyakovo, Vologda Oblast, starting in 1994. They continued to operate the factory as of 2012.
Wife
Navalny was married to Yulia Abrosimova, and together they had two children: a daughter named Dasha Navalnaya and a son named Zakhar.
Career
As of 2021, Navalny boasted over six million YouTube subscribers, using his social media platforms to expose corruption in Russia, organize political demonstrations, and advance his campaigns. He gained notoriety in a 2011 radio interview where he labeled Russia’s ruling party, United Russia, as a “party of crooks and thieves.” Navalny and his Anti-Corruption Foundation (FBK) have consistently published investigations uncovering alleged corruption among top Russian officials. Despite facing legal challenges, including suspended sentences for embezzlement in 2013 and 2014, widely viewed as politically motivated, Navalny continued his activism.
He was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent in August 2020, an act he attributed to Putin’s regime, leading to international condemnation and mass protests. Upon his return to Russia in January 2021, Navalny was promptly arrested and subsequently sentenced to over two and a half years in prison. His organizations were later labeled extremist and dissolved. In a controversial trial in March 2022, he was sentenced to an additional nine years in prison. In August 2023, Navalny received a further 19-year sentence on extremism charges, leading him to remark that his sentence equates to the lifespan of either himself or the current political regime. In December 2023, he disappeared from prison for nearly three weeks before reappearing in a new Arctic detention center in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
