Career
After becoming a school teacher, Schmidt played rugby in New Zealand, featuring in 29 provincial championship games for Manawatu. In 1991, during a gap year, he and his wife Kellie traveled to Ireland. There, he coached Mullingar RFC’s underage teams and played amateur rugby in the Irish lower leagues. Afterward, he returned to New Zealand, teaching English and coaching at various schools, including Palmerston North Boys’ High, Napier Boys’ High School, and Tauranga Boys’ College, where he also served as deputy principal.
Coaching Career
Schmidt transitioned from teaching to coaching, leading Bay of Plenty to victory in the Ranfurly Shield in 2004. He then joined Clermont Auvergne in 2007. Schmidt became Leinster’s head coach in 2010, winning multiple titles. In 2013, he took over as Ireland’s head coach, achieving remarkable success. Despite offers from New Zealand, Schmidt extended his contract until 2019.
He won the 2018 Six Nations and was named World Rugby Coach of the Year. At the 2019 Rugby World Cup, Ireland reached the quarterfinals. Schmidt briefly worked with the Spanish national team in 2020. He became World Rugby’s director of rugby but resigned in 2021.
In 2022, Schmidt joined the All Blacks’ coaching setup as attack coach, contributing to their 2022 Rugby Championship win.
