Vanessa Amorosi Sues Mother Over Property Dispute
Australian artist Vanessa Amorosi is taking legal action against her mother, Joyleen Robinson, seeking ownership of two properties purchased during her successful years. The 42-year-old singer-songwriter appeared in the Victorian Supreme Court in person, where her lawyer presented the case. Barrister Philip Solomon KC stated that the dispute revolved around a property in Narre Warren, Melbourne, and Vanessa Amorosi’s current residence in California. According to the court, Mrs. Robinson established two trusts in 1999 when Amorosi was around 18 years old and experiencing fame. One of the trusts received all of Amorosi’s income from sales and tours, amounting to approximately $1.3 million in 2001.
Approximately $464,000 from that trust was utilized to buy a new family home in Narre Warren in 2001, as stated by Mr. Solomon. The eight-hectare property currently has both Amorosi and Mrs. Robinson listed as joint owners, but the singer is pursuing complete ownership or a majority stake of over 50%.
Additionally, Amorosi aims to gain full ownership of her California residence, which was acquired through the second trust established by her mother. Despite the mortgage attached to the Californian property, Amorosi expressed readiness to take on the debt herself, according to Mr. Solomon.
“These were structures set up for her benefit at a time in her career where she was extraordinarily successful and young,” he told the court.
“If different structures would have been set up … there wouldn’t be a controversy 22 years later.”
In 2015, tensions between Amorosi and her mother began, leading to the singer filing the civil case in 2021, the court was informed. Mr. Solomon pointed out that Mrs. Robinson asserts there was a verbal agreement regarding the Narre Warren property, although he didn’t specify its details. He expressed his intention to wait and hear Mrs. Robinson’s explanation during her cross-examination.
“It’s a matter of regret and disappointment that her mother has done to her what’s occurred,” Mr Solomon told the court.
“It’s always vexing for a family dispute to play out in court.”
On Tuesday morning, Mrs. Robinson attempted to have the trial postponed, but Justice Steven Moore rejected her request. She is scheduled to testify later in the week, following Amorosi’s cross-examination on Thursday.
