Twain, originally named Eilleen Regina Edwards, was born in Windsor, Ontario, on August 28, 1965, to Sharon (née Morrison) and Clarence Edwards. Following her parents’ divorce when she was two years old, her mother relocated to Timmins, Ontario, with Twain and her two sisters, Jill and Carrie Ann. Sharon later married Jerry Twain, a member of the Ojibwa community from the nearby Mattagami First Nation. Together, they had a son named Mark. Jerry adopted the girls, leading to a legal change of their surname to Twain.
Husband
Twain wed producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange on December 28, 1993, and the couple welcomed a son, Eja (pronounced “Asia”), on August 12, 2001. However, their marriage faced turmoil when it was revealed on May 15, 2008, that they were separating due to Lange’s affair with Twain’s best friend, Marie-Anne Thiébaud. The divorce was finalized on June 9, 2010. Later, on December 20, 2010, it was reported that Twain was engaged to Swiss Nestlé executive Frédéric Thiébaud, Marie-Anne’s former husband. They tied the knot on January 1, 2011, in Rincón, Puerto Rico.
Career
Twain’s mainstream pop recognition received a significant boost from her participation in the 1998 VH1 Divas concert alongside Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Carole King, and Aretha Franklin. Additionally, VH1’s 1999 Behind the Music documentary shed light on the challenges she faced in her early life, her physical appeal, and Nashville’s initial resistance to her daring music videos. Following her appearance in Divas, she provided background vocals with Lange for Dion’s songs, “If Walls Could Talk” and “Goodbye’s (The Saddest Word).”
She made her comeback to television on November 12, 2008, as a surprise presenter at the 42nd CMA Awards after her separation from Lange. Twain also served as a guest judge on American Idol in 2009 and appeared in her own TV show, titled Why Not? with Shania Twain, which premiered on May 8, 2011, on OWN. She returned to American Idol as a guest mentor and was almost a judge for the show’s tenth season, a role eventually taken by Jennifer Lopez.
Twain made guest appearances as herself in various productions, including the 2004 film I Heart Huckabees and the Comedy Central series Broad City in 2017. She served as a guest judge on Dancing with the Stars and Rupaul’s Drag Race, competed in TBS’s Drop the Mic, and was honored in a Lip Sync Battle episode dedicated to her music.
Furthermore, in November 2018, she appeared as an executive producer and co-presenter on the reality talent show Real Country alongside Jake Owen and Travis Tritt. Twain also showcased her acting skills in films like Trading Paint (2019), where she starred alongside John Travolta, and portrayed the mother of singer Jeremy Camp in the biographical film I Still Believe (2020). In 2023, she joined the panel for the second series of ITV’s Starstruck, a revamped version of Stars in Their Eyes.
