Dumitru embarked on his professional journey at Empoli during the 2008–09 Serie B season, later joining S.S.C. Napoli in August 2010 at the age of 18. Despite limited opportunities at Napoli, he gained experience with loan spells at various clubs including Empoli, Ternana, and Reggina.
In August 2014, he moved to Greek club Veria, showcasing his talent with notable performances and earning recognition for his goals. He then had a loan stint with Nottingham Forest in 2016 before signing with AD Alcorcón in August 2017 and subsequently transferring to Gimnàstic de Tarragona.
In February 2019, Dumitru returned to Italy to join Livorno before moving to Gaz Metan Mediaș in July 2019. He later ventured abroad, signing with Suwon Bluewings in January 2021 and subsequently playing for UTA Arad in Romania and Bnei Sakhnin in Israel in 2022. Born in Sweden, he was eligible to represent Sweden, Brazil, Romania, or Italy internationally. He participated in the U-19 European Championship with Italy’s U-19 national team in 2010 and was also part of Italy’s U-20 national team.

Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) has revealed the signing of former Nottingham Forest winger Nicolao Dumitru for the upcoming M-League season.
