He worked at many NCAA Division I-A colleges as an assistant coach, including Syracuse in 1977, West Virginia in 1978 and 1979, Ohio State in 1980 and 1981, Navy in 1982, and Michigan State in 1983–1987. On December 22, 1989, Saban was appointed head coach of the University of Toledo, where he started his coaching career. After just one season as head coach of Toledo, Saban left in February of the following year to take a position as defensive coordinator with the Cleveland Browns, where he worked under head coach Bill Belichick.
