His mother, Mary (née Hoare), worked as a seamstress, and his father, Edward Gambon, was an engineering operative during World War II. When Gambon was six, his father moved the family to Mornington Crescent in London’s Camden borough to seek work in the post-war reconstruction of London. At that time, his father arranged for him to become a British citizen, a decision that eventually enabled him to receive a substantive knighthood, rather than an honorary one.

Wife

Gambon tied the knot with mathematician Anne Miller in 1962 when he was just 22 years old. He was famously private about his personal life. The couple resided in Gravesend, Kent, and together, they had a son named Fergus. Fergus went on to become a ceramics expert featured on the BBC series Antiques Roadshow.
