Career

As a child, Luke Albert Combs displayed his musical talents by participating in chorus class, school musicals, and joining his church choir, which even had the honor of performing at Carnegie Hall. His entry into the country music scene began with his first performance at the Parthenon Cafe in Boone. Despite completing five years of education with only 21 hours left to complete his degree, he decided to drop out and pursue a career in country music. He made the pivotal move to Nashville, Tennessee, to follow his musical aspirations.

In February 2014, Combs released his debut EP, “The Way She Rides,” followed by his second EP, “Can I Get an Outlaw,” later that year. His breakthrough came in 2016 with the release of the single “Hurricane,” which sold 15,000 copies in its first week and debuted at number 46 on Hot Country Songs. His third EP, “This One’s for You,” was released in November 2015.

Following a deal with Sony Music Nashville, “Hurricane” was re-released on Columbia Nashville and climbed to number one on the country radio airplay chart in May 2017, holding that position for two weeks. In June 2017, Combs released his major label debut album, also titled “This One’s for You,” which topped Billboard’s Top Country Albums and reached number five on the Billboard 200 in its first week.

His second album, “What You See Is What You Get,” was released on November 8, 2019, featuring chart-topping singles like “Beer Never Broke My Heart,” “Even Though I’m Leaving,” “Does to Me” (a duet with Eric Church), and “Lovin’ on You.” In May 2020, he released the single “Six Feet Apart,” reflecting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Continuing his success, Combs released a deluxe version of “What You See Is What You Get,” titled “What You See Ain’t Always What You Get,” in October 2020. The track “Forever After All” set streaming records in country music.

His third album, “Growin’ Up,” was released on June 24, 2022, featuring singles like “Doin’ This,” and “The Kind of Love We Make,” which reached number one on the country chart and number eight on the Hot 100. His fourth album, “Gettin’ Old,” was released on March 24, 2023, with notable singles including “Love You Anyway” and a cover of Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car.” The latter garnered over 65 million streams on Spotify in less than two months, making it the most popular song from the album. Combs, recalling it as his first favorite song, highlights its enduring impact on him since childhood.
