Her father, Valery Shaykhlislamov (Şəyxelislamov), hailed from Volga Tatar heritage and worked as a coal miner, while her mother, Olga, was of ethnic Russian origin and served as a kindergarten music teacher.
She often attributes her striking appearance to her father, mentioning that people sometimes mistake her for being of South American descent. She explained, “My father was dark-skinned because he was Tatar, and sometimes Tatars can resemble Brazilians. I inherited my light eyes from my mother.”

In 2007, Irina Shayk took over Ana Beatriz Barros’ role and became the new face of Intimissimi. During the same year, she made her debut in the prestigious Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Following her successful tenure as the face of Intimissimi for three years, Shayk was officially appointed as the brand’s ambassador in 2010. Her modeling campaigns expanded to include Beach Bunny Swimwear and Guess for the spring/summer 2009 season.
