Career
During an eighteen-month apprenticeship in watchmaking at the Chopard manufacture in Geneva, Dickson Poon refined his selling skills. Returning to Hong Kong in 1980, he embarked on his entrepreneurial journey, backed by a half-million-pound loan from his father. Starting as a watch salesman, Poon demonstrated his aspirations for success upon founding Dickson Watch and Jewellery.
Through Dickson Concepts, his firm, Poon acquired its first brand within two years by securing a franchise from Charles Jourdan. His drive for success, coupled with his parents’ ambitious spirit, ingrained in him a strong determination from an early age.
Poon was among the pioneering business figures to recognize the demand for high-end designer labels in Asia, akin to the demand in the US and the UK.

In November 2010, Poon made a generous donation of £10 million to St. Hugh’s College, Oxford, for the construction of the Dickson Poon China Centre. This center aims to bring together academics with various research interests related to China, provide accommodation for the college’s postgraduate students, and house the Chinese Collection of the Bodleian Library.
Two years later, Poon followed this donation with a remarkable £20 million contribution to King’s College London to support its existing law faculty. This donation marked the largest single donation by an individual to the university in its history. In recognition of his generosity, the law school at King’s College London was renamed The Dickson Poon School of Law.
