Coaching Career
Brandon initiated his coaching journey as a graduate assistant at Northern Illinois from 2006 to 2008. Subsequently, he ventured into coaching defensive linemen and special teams at Division III St. Thomas (Minnesota) in 2009. Staley then assumed roles as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Hutchinson Community College (Kansas) during 2010 and 2011.
His coaching experience continued with a season at Tennessee as a graduate assistant in 2012. Staley spent three seasons (2013, 2015, 2016) as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at John Carroll University (Ohio), while 2014 saw him serving as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at James Madison University (Virginia).
In 2017, the Chicago Bears hired Staley as their outside linebackers coach. On January 15, 2019, he joined the Denver Broncos in the same capacity, reuniting with head coach Vic Fangio. On January 16, 2020, Staley took on the role of defensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams, succeeding Wade Phillips. In his sole year as coordinator in 2020, he played a pivotal role in guiding the Rams defense to top rankings in points and total yards allowed, enhancing his standing as a sought-after head coaching candidate.

Following their defeat against the Denver Broncos last Sunday, Chargers coach Brandon Staley pointed out the silver lining, expressing optimism about turning their attention to the Las Vegas Raiders on a short week. However, the page they turned to revealed one of the most humiliating losses in franchise history, as the Chargers suffered a 63-21 defeat on Thursday night. This marked the highest points allowed by the Chargers in franchise history and the most ever scored by the Raiders. Despite this setback, Staley conveyed confidence in his players’ belief in him and asserted that he deserved to remain as the head coach.
“I know what I’ve done here for three years, and I know what I’ve put into this, and I know where we’re capable of going,” Staley said. “I know the type of coach I am. I believe in myself.”
The 42-point margin of defeat marked the Chargers’ (5-9) third-worst loss in franchise history, and their 42-0 halftime deficit stood as the most lopsided half in the NFL since 2014.
