Boris Pistorius is the son of Ursula Pistorius and Ludwig Pistorius. His mother, Ursula Pistorius, served as a member of the Osnabrück city council from 1972 to 1996 and also held a position as a member of the Landtag of Lower Saxony.

Boris pursued his law education at the University of Münster and Osnabrück University, with a brief stint at the Catholic University of the West.
Career
Pistorius began his political career as a personal advisor to State Minister for Interior of Lower Saxony Gerhard Glogowski from 1991 to 1995. He then served as the deputy head of Glogowski’s office until 1996. Joining the SPD in 1976, Pistorius held various positions in local government, including serving on the city council from 1996 to 2013 and as the second mayor of Osnabrück from 1999 to 2002. He was elected Mayor of Osnabrück in 2006.
Following the 2013 Lower Saxony state elections, Pistorius became State Minister of the Interior and Sports. He represented the state in the German Bundesrat from 2013 to 2017 and later as an alternate member. Pistorius also vied for leadership positions within the SPD, running for the co-chair position in 2019.
On 17 January 2023, Chancellor Olaf Scholz appointed Pistorius as Minister of Defence in his cabinet. During his tenure, Pistorius pledged significant military aid to Ukraine and participated in international diplomatic meetings, including joint cabinet meetings with Japan and France.
