Career

Barry Williams, who had a childhood aspiration to become an actor, embarked on his television career in 1967 when he made his debut in a Christmas episode of “Dragnet 1967.”

However, it was his portrayal of the eldest son, Greg Brady, on the popular 1970s sitcom “The Brady Bunch” that catapulted him to fame. Before landing this iconic role in 1969, Williams appeared in guest roles on various TV series such as “Adam-12,” “The Invaders,” “That Girl,” “Mission: Impossible,” “The Mod Squad,” “Here Come the Brides,” “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,” and “Bartleby, the Scrivener.”

Following the cancellation of “The Brady Bunch” in 1974, Williams continued to make guest appearances on television and ventured into musical theater. He toured with productions including “Grease,” “The Sound of Music,” “Pippin,” and “West Side Story.”In 1988, he graced Broadway with his presence in the musical “Romance/Romance,” where he took over the lead male role. Williams deviated from his Greg Brady persona when he portrayed English con man Hannibal in “General Hospital” in 1984.

Williams has been part of various “Brady Bunch” reunions, including the 1988 Christmas film “A Very Brady Christmas.” In 1989, he received the Young Artist Foundation’s “Lifetime Achievement” Award for his portrayal of Greg Brady.

His 1992 autobiography, “Growing Up Brady: I Was A Teenage Greg,” co-written with Chris Kreski, became a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a 2000 television film titled “Growing Up Brady,” with Adam Brody playing Williams.

In 2000, Williams made a humorous parody of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” called “The Real Greg Brady.”

Williams briefly appeared as an audience member in the 2002 music video for Peter Gabriel’s song, “The Barry Williams Show.” It’s important to note that the song was about a fictional talk show host, not the actor.

He has also been a featured dancer at the World’s Largest Disco in Buffalo, New York, on multiple occasions. From 2001 to 2002, Williams played Manager Dean “The Machine” Strickland in 13 episodes of the sitcom “Hollywood 7,” which featured the British pop group S Club 7.

In 2003, he portrayed himself in the film “Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star.”

Williams appeared in Episode 6 of the VH1 series “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew” in 2008, offering insights about the impact of drinking on his own life and career.

In 2010, he took on a role in the mockbuster film “Mega Piranha.”

With the passing of Florence Henderson in 2016, Barry Williams became the oldest living cast member of “The Brady Bunch.”

As of 2019, he resides in Branson, Missouri, and tours with the musical group “Barry Williams and the Traveliers.” He also participated in the 2019 television series “A Very Brady Renovation” on HGTV.

In 2021, Williams starred in the Lifetime Christmas film “Blending Christmas,” alongside his fellow “Brady Bunch” co-stars.

In 2022, he, along with Christopher Knight and Mike Lookinland, competed as “Mummies” in season eight of “The Masked Singer.”
