Career
Early in his coaching career, Sathianathan led Negeri Sembilan FA. He served as assistant coach for the national Olympic team from 1997 to 1999 and again from 2002 to 2004.
His first match as head coach was in the 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Bahrain, resulting in a 4–1 loss. Despite a 0–0 draw in the next match at Shah Alam, Malaysia struggled. In 2007, he led the under-23 side to the SEA Games, but Malaysia failed to advance to the semi-finals.
In February 2009, Sathianathan’s contract was terminated after a 5–0 loss to United Arab Emirates in a 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification match.
He became head coach of Felda United F.C. in February 2017, achieving 3rd place in the 2017 Malaysia Super League and reaching the semi-finals of the 2017 Malaysia Cup. He won the Super League’s Best Coach award that season. Despite relegation, he led Felda to win the 2018 Malaysia Premier League and gain promotion.
On November 22, 2018, Sathianathan was announced as Selangor FA’s new head coach, officially confirmed the next day on Selangor’s Facebook page. However, he was sacked on September 21, 2020, due to poor results after the Malaysian Super League resumed.
Cause of Death
B. Sathianathan died of cancer on 18 July 2023, at the age of 65.
He left behind his legacy through his kids, Sheena Satiananthan, Shervina Satiananthan, Visnu Satiananthan and Dorshen Satiananthan.
