Career
Højlund was born in Copenhagen and grew up in Hørsholm, a suburb of the capital. He played for youth football clubs HUIand Brøndby before joining the Copenhagen youth system.
He made his professional debut in Copenhagen at the age of 17 in October 2020. In the 2021–22 season, he made his European debut and scored five goals in the UEFA Europa League in the qualifying rounds and in the tournament itself.
In January 2022, he joined Sturm Graz of the Austrian Bundesliga for a fee of €1.8 million. He scored 12 goals in all competitions at the end of the 2021–22 season and the start of the 2022–23 season in 21 games.
On 27 August 2022, He signed a €17 million contract with Serie A club Atalanta. He scored his first goal for Atalanta on 5 September in a 2–0 away win over Monza. He was initially restricted to a substitute role at the start of the season, but due to the poor form and injuries of regular starter Duván Zapata, he carved out a place in the team. In January 2023, he produced several convincing performances, most notably four goals in four consecutive games.
In September 2022, He played his first international matches for Denmark against Croatia and France in the UEFA Nations League.
