Career
Rooney developed a fondness for Everton during his upbringing and looked up to Brazilian striker Ronaldo, acknowledging him as “probably the best” out-and-out forward. His football journey commenced with Liverpool Schoolboys, where he achieved an impressive record of 72 goals in a single season, a feat standing until May 2010. At nine, he played for Copplehouse boys’ club in the local Walton and Kirkdale junior league, scoring 99 goals in his final season before catching the eye of Everton scout Bob Pendleton.
Making his senior debut on August 17 in a 2–2 home draw against Tottenham Hotspur, Rooney assisted the first goal by Mark Pembridge and became Everton’s second-youngest first-team player in history, following Joe Royle. On October 19, just before his 17th birthday, Rooney scored a last-minute winning goal against Arsenal, ending their 30-match unbeaten run and becoming the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history.
Rooney’s international journey began with his senior debut for England in February 2003 at the age of 17, making him England’s youngest-ever goalscorer. He showcased his talent at UEFA Euro 2004, becoming the youngest goalscorer in the history of the European Championship by scoring four goals. Rooney continued to play in subsequent World Cups (2006, 2010, and 2014), earning recognition as one of England’s premier players. He secured the England Player of the Year award four times (2008, 2009, 2014, and 2015) and holds the records for being England’s second-most-capped player and second-top goalscorer, with 53 goals in 120 international caps.
In terms of individual accolades, Rooney earned the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the FWA Footballer of the Year awards for the 2009–10 season. He clinched the Premier League Player of the Month award five times during his career. Rooney achieved notable recognition by finishing fifth in the 2011 FIFA Ballon d’Or vote and being named in the FIFA FIFPro World XI for 2011. His remarkable bicycle kick against Manchester City in February 2011 won the Premier League 20 Seasons Awards Best Goal accolade, and he also secured the Goal of the Season award by the BBC’s Match of the Day poll on three occasions.
Rooney’s Managerial Journey: Soccer Aid, Derby County, and D.C. United
In August 2020, Wayne Rooney assumed the managerial role for the England team at Soccer Aid 2020, with support from Sam Allardyce and goalkeeper coach David Seaman. Following a challenging start to the 2020–21 season, where Derby County found themselves at the bottom of the Championship table, manager Phillip Cocu was dismissed. Rooney stepped in as part of an interim coaching staff, consisting of Liam Rosenior, Shay Given, and Justin Walker, from November 14, 2020.
With Derby County still grappling with administration issues entering the League One season, Rooney resigned as manager on June 24, 2022. Subsequently, on July 12, 2022, he was unveiled as the head coach for his former club, MLS side D.C. United. Rooney took over from the outgoing manager Hernán Losada, signing a contract until the end of the 2023 season.
However, after the conclusion of the 2023 regular season on October 8, Rooney and the club mutually agreed to part ways. This decision followed D.C. United’s failure to qualify for the playoffs for a second consecutive season.
Birmingham City
On October 11, 2023, Wayne Rooney marked his return to English football by taking on the role of manager for EFL Championship club Birmingham City, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract. Unfortunately, on his debut ten days later, his team suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Middlesbrough, led by his former Manchester United and England teammate Michael Carrick. Rooney faced a challenging start, accumulating just one point from the initial five games, causing his team to plummet from 6th to 18th position in the league standings. However, he secured his first victory as Birmingham manager on November 25, 2023, with a 2-1 win against bottom side Sheffield Wednesday.

Wayne Rooney, sacked as manager of Birmingham City
Regrettably, Rooney’s tenure at Birmingham City came to an end on January 2, 2024, as he was relieved of his duties after managing to secure only two victories in 15 matches. At the time of his departure, Birmingham City found themselves in the 20th position in the league.
“Football is a results business and I recognise they’ve not been at the level I wanted them to be,” Rooney said.
Professional development coach Steve Spooner will assume the interim charge for Birmingham. Additionally, the club has parted ways with one of Rooney’s backroom team members, former Wolves and Wales midfielder Carl Robinson.
Rooney said he now plans to take a break from the game.
“I would like to thank (co-owners) Tom Wagner and Tom Brady and (chief executive) Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club,” he said.
“However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed.
“Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback.
“I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager.”
