Political Career
Before entering the political arena, Lawler worked for the Department of Sport and Recreation.
Lawler faced challenging odds when nominated as the Labor candidate for Drysdale in the 2016 election. The seat, formerly held by the Country Liberal Party’s Lia Finocchiaro, had a substantial CLP majority even after redistribution. Despite the historical dominance of the CLP in Palmerston, the party’s support had dwindled significantly by the 2016 election, with one poll indicating only 37 percent support in the area.
On election night, the CLP experienced a dramatic primary vote decline of over 20 percent. In a notable swing, Lawler secured the seat with over a 16 percent swing. Following her victory, she was appointed as Minister for Education in the cabinet on 11 September 2016. Lawler’s success continued in 2020 when she was re-elected with a slight swing in her favor, making her the first Labor MP to win a second term in a Palmerston-based seat.
Chief Minister of the Northern Territory
On December 20, 2023, Lawler was unanimously elected to succeed Natasha Fyles, who resigned amid controversy surrounding undisclosed shares. Chansey Paech was concurrently elected as Deputy Chief Minister.
