Early Career
Before entering politics, Miles served as a co-founder and managing director of Reveille Strategy, a public relations agency specializing in collaborating with progressive organizations to “mobilize for campaigns and trumpet their message to the community.” Additionally, he gained experience working as an adviser to state treasurer Andrew Fraser and held the position of industrial relations director for the state public sector union Together.
Political Career
Initially aligned with the Labor Right faction, Miles shifted to the Labor Left faction after an unsuccessful bid in the preselection ballot for the Pine Rivers seat before the 2009 Queensland state election. Despite an unsuccessful run as the Labor candidate for Ryan in the 2010 Australian federal election, Miles emerged successful in the 2014 preselection for the state seat of Mount Coot-tha, ultimately securing victory in the 2015 state election.
Upon his election, Miles assumed the roles of Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection as well as Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef in the First Palaszczuk Ministry from February 16, 2015. Following a redistribution in 2017, he successfully contested the Murrumba electorate in the 2017 state election, subsequently being appointed and sworn in as the Minister for Health and Ambulance Services in the Second Palaszczuk Ministry. During the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in Australia, he played a pivotal role as the health minister, declaring a public health emergency in January 2020, marking the first such declaration by an Australian state.
On May 10, 2020, Miles was announced as the new Deputy Premier of Queensland, officially sworn in the next day, succeeding the resigning Deputy Premier Jackie Trad. While maintaining his role as Minister for Health and Ambulance Services until the October 2020 state election, he transitioned to the position of Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government, and Planning in the Third Palaszczuk Ministry following the election.

In December 2023, after Palaszczuk’s resignation, Steven Miles declared his candidacy to assume her role as the state premier and leader of the Australian Labor Party in Queensland. Reports indicated that he held alignment with the predominant left faction and garnered support from the United Workers Union.
Initially contending for the leadership against Shannon Fentiman, Fentiman later withdrew following an agreement between Miles and Cameron Dick of the right faction. In this agreement, Dick was set to become deputy premier. Steven Miles was elected unopposed on December 15, 2023, and was officially sworn in as the premier on the same day.
