In 1999–2007: Teh Tarik Crew
The Teh Tarik Crew, comprising core members Santesh, Berg(UMP), Epi, and Amar(FKP), was founded in 1997 by Mizz Nina and Fiquetional. This laid the foundation for the prominent Malaysian hip-hop group, Teh Tarik Crew , established in 1999. It was under the TTC banner that Mizz Nina’s music career flourished, earning two AIM nominations in 2002 for their full-length album “How’s The Level?” By 2004, Mizz Nina had secured two more AIM nominations, this time for Teh Tarik Crew’s second album, “What’s Next?”. However, in 2007, the group disbanded, with its members pursuing solo careers.
In 2007–2013: Going Solo
In July 2010, Mizz Nina released her debut solo album, “What You Waiting For”. She ventured into international collaborations, teaming up with artists like Theo Martins for the song “Let Me C U Get It,” Colby O’ Donis on “What You Waiting For,” and Grammy nominee Planet Asia on “Hope.” Mizz Nina’s popularity led her to tour Sri Lanka and India, promoting her hit single “What You Waiting For”.
In February 2012, she introduced a new single, “With You,” accompanied by a lyric video on YouTube that garnered over 6,000 views within the first week, reaching 40,000 views within three weeks. Three months later, Mizz Nina launched her second solo album, “Takeover.” In September of the same year, she released her latest single, “Summer Burning” , produced by DJ Poet Name Life and co-written by Jamie Munson, Lucy McIntosh, and Mizz Nina herself . Upon returning, Mizz Nina surprised reporters and fans with her transition to a more modest image, deviating from her earlier sexy pop singer persona, as her newfound commitment to her Muslim faith took hold. For this special occasion, Mizz Nina, whose real name is Shazrina Azman, donned an elegant white dress paired with a hijab designed by Ezzati Amira. Her husband, the Moroccan-American faith-based rapper Essam Muhammad, complemented her attire with a traditional robe and skullcap.
